The #1 song on the Global Billboard charts right now is “Golden” by Huntr/x, which is insane, because Huntr/x is a fictional music group from the Netflix film KPop Demon Hunters.

Let’s unpack this massive cultural moment here…

KPop Demon Hunters is as if Wicked was written in 2025. It’s a musical grounded in one of the biggest music genres and cultural movements of today, *KPop.*

It’s released on the world’s largest streaming platform in a format that is growing, accessible across generations with a strong affinity towards the youth, *animation.*

It’s a combination of kid-friendly action, Kpop music that’s still enjoyable for anyone, and light fantasy horror — a unique intersection of different genres.

It’s conscious of a world where platforms like TikTok have trending songs and sounds that encourage people to create content that becomes natural marketing extensions.

It doesn’t just pay homage to KPop, it features professional producers and singers who contribute to the intentional music strategy that has made “Golden” the number one song in the world.

It has been built with a transmedia strategy in mind from day one. We’ll see film sequels, a series, future albums, merchandise, video games, collabs, and brand partnerships all built on top of the KPop Demon Hunters franchise.

The fictional Kpop groups from the film, Huntr/X and the Saja Boys, could perform live as virtual concerts or as characters in video games!

You’re living under a rock if you still don’t realize the global cultural power of Kpop. But even I was surprised to see Huntr/X’s “Golden” break Billboard records and KPop Demon Hunters break Netflix viewing records.

The success of this big creative bet will hopefully inspire even more creativity in media. And we’re likely STILL undervaluing the appeal of Kpop, animation, and transmedia.
